Quote of the Month

"I took to photography like a duck to water. I never wanted to do anything else. Excitement about the subject is the voltage which pushes me over the mountain of drudgery necessary to produce the final photograph."

— Berenice Abbott

» The Photography Mentorship Program Celebrates First Anniversary
We're excited to share the great news about the success of our Mentorship Program. In 2009, thirty-six people have expanded their photographic horizons while working with their mentors. One of the first to sign up with Sam Abell was Jimmy Lam, a photographer in Singapore. He relates, "I instantaneously made the decision to apply for this program. It was a 'no brainer.' I live in Asia. In Chinese custom, if a great master offers you the opportunity to be his disciple, you do not ask whether you should accept the offer. You just ask when and where." Scott Crist says of his mentorship with Bobbi Lane, "My new web site is up with a lot of help from Bobbi. It's much more focused on where I want to be in life, and she had 99.9% to do with it. I couldn't ask for a better mentor. I look forward to our next conversation the minute I hang up."

For those considering a mentorship, December is a great time to take the plunge and sign-up, as prices are increasing in January.  Call the Workshops Director Reid Callanan at (505) 9830-1400, ext. 15 to discuss the opportunities and possibilities or visit mentors.santafeworkshops.com.

Lighting Portraits on Location
with Alan M. Thornton
February 14 - February 20

Location portraiture is one of the most rewarding and exciting pursuits in photography—requiring us to interact with our subject, our location, and the light and atmosphere we find or help to create. Participants in this workshop learn to understand and apply the principles of location portraiture through the creative possibilities of location, light, and most importantly, the subject. The focus of the week is on creating simple but expressive lighting schemes with speedlights, professional strobes, and hot lights.

Portraits Unplugged
with Bobbi Lane
February 14 - 20

This workshop is designed to develop your ability to see the quality of light and apply it to real people. We don't scout locations, we scout light, and then make the location work. The emphasis is on utilizing all of our tools—light, tonality, composition, and color—to state our ideas visually. Through demonstrations, field trips, and personal projects, we explore the realm of existing light: hard, soft, bounced, reflected, and diffused.
