of the Month
"To me, photography is an art of observation. It's about finding something interesting in an ordinary place... I've found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them"

of going beyond the surface of traditional photographic
portraits, this workshop in San Miguel de Allende emphasizes
creating a personal style of portraiture through the
nontraditional use of color and environment. Using
any and all photographic tools, Paul and Leasha illuminate
ways to expand the photographic possibilities of the
dynamic color portrait. Other topics addressed include

Imagination
and Dreams
with Elizabeth Opalenik
October 21-27
Elizabeth Opalenik has never forgotten the exciting moment, some 30 years ago,
when she realized that she could convey her feelings and thoughts through her
photographs. This workshop is about searching for that excitement and those images
that move and sustain us. We learn to make photographs that express our ideas,
through various exercises designed to heighten awareness. From portraits to landscapes,
images are stepping stones that trace where the mind has been and form the unique
vision each of us carries through life. Our week includes daily assignments and
discussions on such topics as print presentation, organizing a portfolio, digital
infrared, and intimate handmade books.

A Visual Journey
with Renie Haiduk
October 21-27
Photography reveals our internal world in surprising
ways. During this week, each of us sets forth on a
path of self-discovery, transitioning from predictable
images to photographs that reveal our innermost beliefs
and feelings. By exploring light in our physical environment,
we practice seeing faces and spaces from a more heartfelt
place. We visit a variety of locations, work with models,
and pursue individual assignments. Each day we critique
the previous day’s work, discussing creative
concerns and other possibilities.
Other workshops available in
San Miguel de Allende include:
Heart
Mind, and Eye with Norman Mauskopf
The Travel Assignment with
Macduff Everton
Photographing People with Sarah Meghan Lee
The Portrait and the Nude with Jock Sturges
The
People and Culture of Colonial Mexico with Ralph
Lee Hopkins
The
Color of Mexico with Arthur Meyerson
Revealing
Portraits with Robb Kendrick

Photoshop Intensive
October 19-21
with Joel Lipovetsky and Dottie Lopez
Designed for photographers who are ready to take their images to the next
step but don’t have time to attend a weeklong seminar, this two-and-a-half-day
intensive provides a strong foundation in Photoshop CS3. Digital lab gurus
Joel and Dottie explain the advantages of working with Camera Raw and demonstrate
a range of techniques for making global and local adjustments to images, such
as color correction, creating black-and-white images, sepia toning, and retouching.
We navigate the tool palettes, working with adjustment layers, image layers,
masking, and selecting, and discuss the use of channels, filters, sharpening,
and compositing. We learn ways to automate and speed up the workflow. In addition,
we review the importance of soft proofing in Photoshop CS3. Participants practice
these newly acquired techniques in a photographic assignment to capture the
beauty of Santa Fe.

Calumet Photographic News
Lately, a few DSLRs have embraced live-view technology—but
those screens are still static, so composing accurate shots high
overhead, low to the ground or at odd angles remains a challenge.
Enter the Zigview S2 Digital Viewfinder, an innovative accessory
whose 2.5" live-view LCD flips and rotates to accommodate
almost any perspective.
More than that, the Zigview S2 promises remote and interval
shooting in a tiny package that attaches easily to your DSLR’s
eyepiece. Naturally, we had to snap one on and take it for a
test drive. Find out how the Zigview S2 performed and what we
thought in our latest Calumet Review.

In the September/October issue of Calumet Focus, we speak to
St. Louis photographer Brian Kuhlmann about sticking close to
home and still landing those lucrative, big-name clients. An
aspiring photog since seventh grade, Kuhlmann now melds ambitious
concepts with compelling images for the likes of Bacardi, Maxim
Magazine and rapper Nelly, to name just a few.
“Too many photographers moan and groan they don’t
have the work,” says Kuhlmann, “but they’re
never working on themselves or their portfolios…People
respond to new, fresh and interesting ideas.”
See what he says about generating ideas, keeping tabs on the
competition and navigating difficult shoots. And don’t

up to receive Calumet Enews, your weekly resource for new
