» Reid Callanan on San Miguel's Unique Charm

Cuba and San Miguel
© Reid Callanan

What makes San Miguel de Allende, Mexico an ideal travel destination for photographers? We asked Reid Callanan, Director of Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, for his take on this Unesco World Heritage Site's distinctive charm and photographic opportunities.

One of Reid's go-to strategies for travel photography is to wait for a picture to develop in an interesting place."Find a backdrop with an interesting architectural component, beautiful light, a colorful street mural, or anything unusual and park yourself there," Reid says, "and wait for an interesting photo to unfold. It could be a horse passing by, a wedding party, a man carrying a cello, or a child with a goat. If you wait long enough, an interesting photograph will reveal itself."

San Miguel, he says, lends itself particularly well to this style of photography. "In San Miguel, life is lived in the streets. It's primarily a walking town. Kids walk to school, people walk to work, street merchants put out produce daily." Because of this, he says, you'll often find more happening on one street corner in San Miguel than happens in several city blocks in the car-centric U.S.

Join Reid in San Miguel for his Cameras Don’t Take Pictures workshop, October 19–24. Perhaps early one morning you'll park yourself on a street corner in San Miguel and watch the city wake up. And you'll discover exactly what Reid means.

» A Landscape to Love: Snowmass in Autumn

© Norm Clasen, © Clare O'Neill

Brilliant gold aspen trees light up the mountain landscape of Snowmass each autumn, providing a stunning environment for photographic exploration. In addition, local festivals like the Snowmass Balloon Festival and Ferrari car event mean hot air balloons dot the skies and gorgeous supercars purr through the winding roads.

In appreciation of these abundant photographic opportunities, we’re offering three workshops in Snowmass, September 9-14:

The Color Moment: Autumn in Snowmass
with Norm Clasen
Heighten your awareness of seeing in color in the picture-perfect setting of Snowmass, Colorado.

Encaustic: Autumn in Snowmass
with Clare O'Neill
Explore creative new dimensions in your photography by learning the technique for blending encaustic with photography.

The Color Landscape: Autumn in Snowmass
with Ian Shive
Point your lens towards the iconic landscape of Snowmass and challenge yourself to create fresh and unique imagery.

In addition to the vibrant natural setting, the Snowmass Balloon Festival and Ferrari car event provide ample photographic possibilities!
